Hailing from the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania, Rick Phillips now calls Claymont, Delaware his home. After graduating with honors from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and studying under renowned artists, Henry Koerner and Flavia Zortea, Rick excelled as an illustrator, working for more than 25 years with public relation firms and advertising agencies in the mid-atlantic region. His accomplishments include commissioned works for Bank of America, Campbell Soup Company, Glaxo SmithKline Pharmaceuticals, as well as for private collections. In the mid nineties, Phillips changed his career path as an illustrator to that of a fine artist. Benefitting from the experienced gained as an illustrator in the fast paced world of advertising, Phillips combined his ability to paint quick and bold with his interest and fascination of impressionist painters of the 19th-century. Rick uses his knowledge of light and color to create atmosphere you can almost touch and smell. Painting en plein aire is almost a religious experience for Phillips. Using hard and soft edges selectively he develops the feeling of moisture, wind, and the warmth of the sun in his wonderful paintings. Phillips is also drawn to painting alla prima paintings of the human figure. He has studied at Studio Incammanati, Delaware College of Art and Design, and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He is a active member of The Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts. In 2012 Rick founded the Darley Arts Center, a gallery for visual artist and a center for Art Education and workshops. Phillips is represented by Square Pear Fine Art Gallery in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania as well as the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes, Delaware. Rick also invites you to view his work by appointment at his home/studio in Claymont, Delaware.
